Sound Advice
You will no doubt receive a great deal of advice during your piano shopping. After many years of working with students, teachers, and piano enthusiasts, we feel the best shopping advice we can give is that a piano needs to do three things for a student to be successful.
- A piano needs to teach the student's ear to recognize pitch, so it needs to hold its tune very well.
- A piano needs to teach the student's fingers the muscle-memory necessary to play with expression, so the keys need to be weighted and evenly balanced.
- Finally, and most importantly, the piano needs to inspire the pianist to want to sit down and play it. This is very important and often overlooked. Be practical, but get a piano you can be proud of and one that you are excited about playing. You are probably going to own it for a very long time.
